Anna Flowers – The Hotel Hershey

Student Name: Anna Flowers
Major/Program: Hospitality and Business
Internship Site: The Hotel Hershey, Hershey PA
Role/Title: Recreation Supervisor/ Intern
Semester/Year: Senior
Anticipated graduation date: Spring 2026

1. One Thing I Learned
Through this internship, I gained skills in managing a large group of individuals and how to effectively communicate with guests, staff, and other individuals. Also gaining experience of how to handle inconvenient situations.

2. One Thing I Did not Know Before This Internship
My position at the Hotel was in Recreation, handling the pools, activities, fitness center and all the staff that runs these areas. I was able to learn how to do pool chemicals and gain my lifeguard certification. Before this internship I never thought of recreation, such as the pool and activities as a sector of hospitality. This gave me a new perspective and interest in this type of hospitality by doing it over the summer.

3. A Challenge I Faced
An example of a challenge myself and my staff had to overcome was a little boy falling and breaking his wrist. My two attendants who were with him immediately called the ambulance. The boy was taken to the hospital with his family, but the front desk and security were giving my staff and myself a tough time. I was able to calm down the situation but also stood on my ground and backed up my staff, since they did the right thing and did what they were trained to do.

4. One Fun Fact from My Experience
Include a lighthearted or interesting detail—an event, a unique task, something memorable (2–4 sentences).
I have so much experience from this internship, but one of them being two lifeguards messing around with a beach ball in the guard office. One thing led to another, and the framing of the top of the door was ripped off. I was able to fix it by banging it back into the wall. This event happened so quickly, and it was hilarious.

5. Advice for Future Interns
My advice would be to get outside of your comfort zone and to be willing to learn something new. Coming into an internship position is doing a job you have never done before, hence wanting to gain experience in it. Being able to allow yourself to ask questions and to ask for help only allows you to grow.
