POSITION: Area Coordinator
(12-month live in position; includes room for entire year and board for academic year)
DEPARTMENT: Residence Life
REPORTS TO: Assistant Vice President for Student Life
JOB PURPOSE: Area Coordinators are full-time, live-in professional staff members responsible for student development within the residence halls. Area Coordinators (AC) act as an on-call professional staff member rotating during the week and weekends throughout the year. AC is responsible for overseeing a residential community which may house up to 300 students. The AC provides leadership and support to the Resident Assistants (RA’s) and the Senior Resident Assistants (SRA’s); administrative management in the areas of security, housing, programming, and student conduct. This is a 12-month position which requires on-campus living.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervision and paraprofessional staff development for Resident Assistants and Senior Resident Assistants
- Manage the daily operations of assigned on-campus communities
- Work with the Office of Student Activities and Leadership Development to develop and implement residential and campus-wide programming
- Participate in the on-call professional staff duty rotation
- Mediate roommate conflicts
- Adjudicate student conduct matters
- Develop community within the residential facilities, including within living learning communities
- Participate in Resident Assistant recruitment, selection and training
- Provide crisis intervention support and follow-up for students
- Provide initial counseling for students with academic or personal concerns; make referrals if appropriate
Summer Camps and Conferences:
- Assists with the housing and facilities aspects of summer camps and conferences.
- Prepare residence halls and distribute keys.
- Assist with check-in / check-out of the different groups

QUALIFICATIONS
Experience, Competencies, and Education
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Professional Residence Life live-in experience recommended
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- On-campus living required; must be available to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, on-call
- Understanding of issues and trends impacting college students today
- Ability to work within a team and motivate others
- Effective communication, organization and human relations skills
- Willingness and ability to maintain a high level of competence and professionalism
- Discreet judgment and confidentiality are expected
