About
Sandy Smith joins the faculty at Keystone College following an active career in higher education as a faculty member and academic administrator for several institutions. After completing her doctorate at Ohio State University, she served as a faculty member and administrator at Penn State University’s Fayette Campus in Uniontown, Pa., for 16 years. She left Penn State for an academic dean’s position at the University of Wisconsin-Marathon County in Wausau, Wis. Family care caused her to leave Wisconsin and return to Pennsylvania to help with aging parents. Since then, during the last several years, at both Clarion University and the SUNY College at Oneonta, she assisted with sport-related curricular and program development, as well as teaching courses in their sport management and exercise science programs.
Dr. Smith brings a wealth of experience in sport management to Keystone College’s SRM program. Beyond her work in higher education, she adds the following experiences relevant to sport and recreation management:
- Collegiate coaching experience in softball (Division I) and volleyball
- High School coaching experience in softball and volleyball
- Athletic Director at Penn State University-Fayette Campus
- Sport Official in volleyball, basketball, and softball (high school, college, and recreation)
- Executive Director/Coach of a competitive Junior Olympic Volleyball Club in western PA
- Managed, supervised, and directed numerous sport camps and clinics in western PA
Seasonal employment with local YMCA and numerous Community Recreation programs

Dr. Smith has had opportunities to visit several significant ancient sports facilities including—the Coliseum in Rome, the Stadium at Delphi (Greece), the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, the Nike symbol and The Grand Theater in Ephesus (Turkey), the Mayan Ruins (Stadium) in Guatemala, and the Hippodrome of Constantinople in Istanbul.
