Keystone College to Host 29th Annual Golf Tournament

La Plume – Keystone College will conduct the 29th annual Keystone Open Golf Tournament on Monday, July 1 at Glen Oak Country Club in Clarks Summit.

Proceeds from the event support the Keystone College Alumni Association Scholarship and Engagement Fund. Local golfers are invited to participate.

Golfer registration fee is $200 per person, which includes lunch, green fees, cart, refreshments, buffet dinner, and prizes. Lunch and registration begins at 11 a.m. followed by a 12:30 p.m. shot-gun start. Refreshments and dinner will follow the tournament. Sponsorship opportunities for local businesses are still available. To register or obtain more information, please go to www.keystone.edu/keystoneopen or call (570) 945-8168.

This year’s tournament is especially notable because it will honor long-time Keystone College coach, professor, and athletic director Michael Mould, Ph.D., who will serve as honorary chairman of the event.

Dr. Mould served as a college athletic director for 42 years, including 28 years at Keystone. While at Keystone, Dr. Mould began the men’s soccer program and coached the team for the first three years of its existence, taking it to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Tournament in just his third year.

Dr. Mould was instrumental in developing women’s varsity athletics at Keystone, while overseeing the overall growth of varsity athletic programs from two to 10 sports. As coach of the Keystone baseball team, Dr. Mould led the team to 11 NJCAA Eastern Regional Tournament appearances. He also coached the men’s basketball program from 1962-1965.

Dr. Mould was awarded the 1981 Margaretta Belin Chamberlin Chair Award for Distinguished Faculty Service, and served as the chairperson of the committee that developed the design of the Gambal Athletic Center as well as the college tennis complex and the Edmunds Softball Field. Dr. Mould continues to serve the Keystone Athletic Department as a mentor and assists on special projects.

“The Keystone Open is always a meaningful event for the entire college community, especially since it supports our Alumni Association Scholarship, said Keystone Alumni Association President Don Cadman. “However, this year is even more special because we are honoring Dr. Mike Mould, who for so many years has exemplified the values and mission of Keystone both in the classroom and on the athletic field.”

“I am honored to once again be a part of the Keystone Open Golf Tournament and I’m especially honored to serve as chair for this year’s event. Keystone has been a huge part of my life for so many years and to have an opportunity to give back this year is even more gratifying.

Students who have received the scholarship are thankful for what it has meant to their education.

“Receiving assistance from the Keystone Alumni Association Scholarship and Engagement Fund has really helped me afford my college education,” said Keystone student Olivia Brodhead. “It also makes me realize that Keystone really is a community where people care about each other. Someday, I hope to assist a Keystone student in the same way.”

Keystone offers more than 40 undergraduate and graduate degree options in liberal arts and science-based programs in business, communications, education, fine arts, natural science, environmental resource management, geology, and social sciences. Located 15 minutes from Scranton, Pa. and two hours from New York City and Philadelphia, Keystone is known for small class sizes and individual attention focused on student success through internships, research, and community involvement.
