The Center for Service Learning at Keystone College provides students, faculty, and staff with coordinated opportunities to engage in service to the community, both locally and globally. Since the creation of the Center for Service Learning in 1999, this center has already documented more than 52,000 hours of service. Members of the Keystone College community participate in a variety of service activities and events including Special Olympics, Ronald McDonald House, Big Brother/Big Sister Halloween Carnival and the United Way Day of Caring. Each semester, the Center for Service Learning oversees dozens of innovative service projects including an annual alternative spring break trip which gives students the opportunity to serve beyond their local community. Most recently, the students traveled over Spring Break join the Philadelphia Higher Education Network for Neighborhood Development. The students visited Trevor's Place and facilitated a variety of activities for children related to health awareness, including healthy eating, self-image and physical fitness. Trevor's Place is a homeless shelter for young mothers and their children. Students toured Philadelphia on Friday afternoon and assisted at a company called the Nonprofit Technology Resources on Saturday, March 1st.
Keystone College is re-funded as a second-year AmeriCorps Scholars in Service to Pennsylvania (SISPA) host site
The Center for Service Learning was very excited to learn that we were approved for another year to enroll our students in the AmeriCorps Scholars in Service to PA program.
Scholars in Service to Pennsylvania is an AmeriCorps Education Award Only program (Ed Award). This means that participating students enroll as AmeriCorps members on a part-time basis and receive a partial Education Award at the end of their term. Students may choose to do a "quarter-time" or "minimum-time" commitment. A student who completes 450 hours of service over one calendar year can earn an education award of $1,250; a student who completes 300 hours of service over one year can earn a $1,000 education award. We anticipate that this program will be available in subsequent years, essentially allowing students to do multiple terms. Students can do up to 2 terms of Scholars in Service regardless of which level of commitment they make. The award can be used to pay for any legitimate educational expense at their current undergraduate institution or to pay for future educational expenses, as well as to re-pay student loans.
