"Teaching English in South Korea"

After countless hours of studying calculus, abstract algebra, and differential equations, Phillip DelTorto ’10 never expected to be teaching English as a second language. But that is exactly what the 2010 math education graduate is doing in Seoul, South Korea.

Bitten by the travel bug
After spending a semester studying abroad in Barcelona, Spain, Phil was bitten by the travel bug. When a friend suggested putting his wanderlust to good use by teaching English as a second language in South Korea, he was intrigued. After learning more about South Korea, particularly Seoul, Phil was

sold. “I really had a remarkable experience while studying abroad in Barcelona. I figured ‘why not experience another culture?’” Phil explains. “Seoul is such a clean and modern city; it is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced.”

Keystone influence
Although Phil isn’t teaching math equations state-side as he initially envisioned his future, teaching English as a second language has proven to be a perfect fit. “Keystone taught me to be a professional educator, not just a math teacher,” Phil said. “With this opportunity, I’m able to combine my love for teaching and travel.”

Phil is quick to point out that Keystone faculty and staff were instrumental in his journey. “Dr. Youyu Phillips, associate professor, sparked my interest in multicultural affairs and diversity,” Phil said. “Shirley Michaels, study abroad coordinator, introduced me to traveling abroad and really encouraged me to spend a semester in Barcelona. She has been a big help throughout this entire process.”

The future
While he isn’t sure if he wants to remain in Seoul, South Korea, Phil knows for sure he would like to continue teaching abroad in the future. “When living abroad, everything is an experience. Just going out to eat in a restaurant is a learning opportunity.” With his solid Keystone education, love for traveling, and open mind, who knows where you’ll find Phil? He just might be teaching math back home in Dalton, Pa., or traveling the globe.
