Tips for Parents
You can help us to help your student by:
- Becoming a partner with us in the success of your student
- Understanding that adjusting to the college experience and workload can be stressful
- Learning something about what college life is like and what to expect
- Preparing yourself to deal with your student's homesickness and perhaps your own "empty nest" syndrome
- Attending Family Day, if possible, scheduled for approximately 3-4 weeks into the semester
- Encouraging your student to ask questions when s/he doesn't understand or doesn't know how to find something
- Suggesting that your student become familiar with campus buildings and offices
- Emphasizing the importance of eating well, exercising, and getting enough sleep
- Encouraging your student to put together a weekly schedule that includes time for classes, studying, eating, socializing, and sleeping
- Emphasizing the importance of getting used to the amount of reading early in the semester and cautioning your student about procrastinating
- Reminding your student that help is available from advisors, counselors, faculty, tutors, residence hall staff, and others
- Encouraging your student to attend athletic events and student activities
- Staying in touch with your student, but also allowing them some room to grow
- Calling individuals listed as campus resources with questions or concerns
