La Plume, Pa.Keystone College will co-sponsor an Interdependence Community Celebration at Courthouse Square in downtown Scranton on Friday September 5 from 4-8 p.m. as part of the city’s monthly First Friday activities.

Keystone is working with the Greater Scranton Interdependence Day Committee to host the Courthouse Square event which will feature art projects, music, and performances to honor the values and ideals represented by Interdependence Day. The event will feature drumming by Steve Kurilla, music and juggling by Jamie Orfanella, a performance by a Nepali traditional dance group, and a variety of art projects will be on display.

“This is the first of many years we hope to gather at historic Courthouse Square in Scranton to celebrate the concept of local and global interdependence,” said Susan Constantine, Keystone instructor and chairperson of the Courthouse Square celebration.

Following the Courthouse Square program, the Interdependence Hexagon Project will open at the Mall at Steamtown from 6-9 p.m. The Hexagon Project is an international visual arts project created to enable citizens from around the world to express their ideas about global connectedness, and civil rights and responsibilities. Hexagons made by students from several local high schools will be on display as symbols of interdependence.

The Interdependence Day Project, which was conceived and launched in the Scranton area by local resident Sondra Myers in 2003, recognizes the importance of  showing respect for others and working together for peace and justice.

There will also be an Interdependence Day panel discussion on Wednesday, September 10 at 5:30 p.m. at the Scranton Cultural Center featuring a discussion on “The Journey from Indifference to Interdependence.”
