Interdependence Day activities announced, highlighted by activist Candace Gingrich-Jones

La Plume – Nationally known activist Candace Gingrich-Jones will visit Keystone College on Thursday, September 13 at 7 p.m. in the Theatre in Brooks. The event, which is free and open to the public, is part of Keystone’s Interdependence Day celebration taking part over a two-day period.

A  nationally known advocate for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights, Ms. Gingrich-Jones is the sister of  2012 Republican presidential candidate and former speaker of the House of Representatives Newt Gingrich. She is the author of “The Accidental Activist” an autobiography which captures her path to LGBT advocacy. Her involvement with LGBT rights began in 1995 when her brother was elected Speaker of the House and she had an opportunity to make her voice heard.

Ms. Gingrich-Jones has been profiled in national newspapers and magazine, has guest-blogged at the Huffington Post and has appeared on “Good Morning America,” “Countdown with Keith Olbermann,” and the “Queen Latifah Show.” She also guest-starred on the TV show “Friends.”  

On behalf of the Human rights Campaign, the nations largest LGBT civil rights an advocacy organization, Ms. Gingrich-Jones has criss-crossed the country to promote the importance of coming out, the duty to vote, and the power of everyday conversations to change minds.

Her visit follows Keystone’s other Interdependence Day activities scheduled for Tuesday, September 11. There will be a Global Fair from 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Hibbard Campus Center. The event will include a study abroad fair and global interdependence displays by students groups.

Keystone will also host the global simulation workshop, World Games, on September 11 from 1:30 - 4 p.m. at the Gambal Athletic Center. The workshop is an experiential event enabling students to see the positive nature of globally sustainable development. More than 200 Keystone students plan to attend the workshop.

Interdependence Day was created as a time to reflect upon the importance of living peacefully in a global society. Launched in response to the tragic events of September 11, 2001, the first Interdependence Day was held on Sept. 12, 2003 in Scranton, Philadelphia, and Budapest, Hungary, and at several college campuses across the nation.
