Graduation Year: 2014
Music has been a part of the Western educational tradition since ancient times. The value of musical training has been recognized by scholars of the Classical, Medieval and Renaissance periods over hundreds of years. It was one of the Seven Liberal Arts which made up the components of a Classical Education and, in that tradition, it was closely linked with mathematics.
Numerous studies have been conducted over the years which link musical training to higher verbal and mathematical performance. Other studies demonstrate its positive impact on brain development.
A survey of the most recent literature shows more evidence of music’s strong impact on brain development, academic performance, critical thinking, and even adult health.
Michael Manzano plans to obtain a position as a secondary level Social Studies teacher after graduation in 2014.
