Sarah Langan traveled in a group of 10 students, led by Dr. Jerry Skinner and Christine Parise, to Belize for Spring Break to study Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. During the nine day field trip to the Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary in Belize, the Hilton Center director Bill Hilton, Jr. taught students how hummingbirds are observed, captured, banded, and released.
As “citizen scientists,” the students played integral roles in conducting field work and making observation, visiting diverse habitats, and leaning about fascinating aspects of Belize’s abundant natural history and fascinating Mayan culture.
"My trip to Belize really opened my eyes to all the wonderful and beautiful things that are going on in the world every day. If I had to summarize it in one sentence, it would simply be; Best spring break ever! with no exaggeration."
